Bubble Community 1
This series explores the way we shape each other through the metaphor of the glass bubble
Bubble Community 1 began as a way to push the limits of my hot-assembly process, but quickly became a metaphor for the ways in which humans use community to work together and/or form and shape each other. The sculpture consists of seven bubbles, six clear and one heliotrope, which have been fused together hot.
One can see that the clear bubbles support each other and shape each other in a variety of ways, from pushing against each other on the faces where they meet to puffing out past another bubble on the edge of the sculpture, or collapsing back towards its counterparts in the case of the topmost clear bubble. The heliotrope (purple) bubble supports the construction of clear bubbles, giving them a safe and stable base from which to expand and grow, just as a mentor or parent may. The bubble itself is not shaped much by the clear bubbles which rest upon it, just slightly indented from where they connect, denoting a potentially less formative side of the relationship.
Blown Together, Grown Together
The earliest concept in this series, Blown Together, Grown Together is a sculpture inspired by the poster Build Accepting and Inspiring Spaces in the World which drew from the imagery of bubbles packing in among each other, shaping their forms, just as creative people do for one another by inspiring and informing their works.
This collection of six bubbles has been cut and polished on the front face to reveal the complex geometry of their walls, formed when they were pushed and compressed into the rectangular form of the sculpture. It is these boundaries which the series will explore further.
